Via David Karol, check out this series of color photos from 1939 to 1943. As it turns out, the country wasn't always black and white. The world of 70 years ago seems a lot less distant this way.

In the same years in which those pictures were taken, Lois Lenski wrote an extraordinary series of childrens books, in which she sought to capture the traditional regional lives and dialects of American children, in her American Regional Series.
Today, the school libraries where I live have discarded most of these for racial and gender stereotyping.
