Temperature Trends

Andrew Gelman is right: this graph is pretty bad. If you want to get a sense of what temperature trends look like over the past century or so, I find a lowess trendline useful:

Hmmmm. Hot during a shooting war (WWII), cold during the Cold War, then it heated up again, peaking at 9/11. Is there an article in this?

Yes, Gelman's criticism is right on the money, and John Nugent's Tufte-analysis evisceration of the first graph, near the top of the comments, is a thing of beauty. In my dreams I write like that.

And yes, the signal is alarming.
