Why not just publicly beg for a hurricane?

Florida Gov. Charlie Crist is really pushing the ol' hubris meter. Here he is actually suggesting that Florida hasn't been hit by a hurricane since he became governor because he prayed to God to spare Florida any serious storms during a visit to the Western Wall in Jerusalem. Putz, you don't do this at the beginning of the hurricane season! What happens when Florida gets hit? You blame God? Yourself?

His "prayers" are just an attempt to win over the Conservative base for his Senate campaign.

Well, yeah, but any vote he does win through this move gets lost as soon as a hurricane makes landfall in FL. Plus, he gets a reputation as a craven, hubristic putz whom God despises.

Dr. Masket, what do you think about Charlie Crist having to name an interim senator for the seat he's running for? Can this choice help or potentially hurt him? Or will it not make any difference?

This whole sequence was awkward.

It's an interesting little challenge for Crist. He's got to pick someone who's loyal enough to Crist that he/she definitely won't run next year, but also someone who doesn't appear like a total lackey, as that would make an interesting campaign issue. Lots of non-trivial landmines out there.
